The Star Wars® galaxy has witnessed some epic clashes: Republic against the Empire, droids versus clones, rebels taking on stormtroopers, Jedi standing up to Sith – all variations of the age-old feud of good versus evil. Nobody benefits from war but one thing’s for sure, conflicts definitely get resolved in dramatic fashion on the battlefield. No two battles are the same and the fighters must adapt to the conditions of each galactic face-off in order to make it out on top – or at least make it out alive! Here are our top picks of some of the biggest and scariest battles ever. We should probably remind you not to try any of these battle tactics at home… unless you happen to have a working lightsaber or X-wing handy!*
Battle of Geonosis
The Jedi have faced some ferocious opponents but none quite as vicious as the wild beasts in the execution arena on planet Geonosis. As hordes of Geonosians watch on from the stands the savage acklay, nexu, and reek are set upon prisoners Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Padme Amidala. And this is all before the main battle has even begun! The trio get the beasts under control with a combination of Force powers and sheer guts just before rolling droidekas are sent in to finish them off. Luckily Jedi reinforcements arrive along with the newly formed clone army and Yoda at the helm. After a colossal effort (and some excellent lightsaber action!) the Republic claims victory – just about!
If you find this kind of beastly battle exciting, then maybe look up the Battle of Naboo – which involves some crazy creatures in the form of the two-legged Kaadu in the Gungan army, versus the identical droids in the droid army on the Trade Federation side, plus a whole lot of blue booma bomb action!
Battle of Yavin
Some of the most thrilling Star Wars battle action takes place in space. Here starfighters, TIEs, and Star Destroyers have met in some spectacular space conflicts. It’s a particularly perilous environment as pilots can be attacked from all sides, so they have to think fast and have great maneuvering skills.
When the Emperor’s Death Star tracks the rebels to their HQ on Yavin 4, the Alliance only has one chance to destroy the enormously powerful battle station and save the galaxy (and themselves!). With just a handful of battle-worn starfighters the rebel pilots face-off with the Empire’s enormous starfleet. But the plucky rebels have a small but significant advantage, which they fully exploit! They have discovered a flaw on the Death Star so that when rebel pilot Luke Skywalker fires a torpedo into an exhaust port, the chain reaction destroys the entire battle station!
Although a duel is only between two people, it can be just as intense as a full scale battle. In the Star Wars galaxy, duels are often fought with lightsabers, or with dangerous Force lightning blasted from the hands. Heroic rebel Luke Skywalker has been involved in some of the most dramatic duels, as he has fought his father, the Sith Lord Darth Vader, not just once but twice! The wise and powerful Jedi Master Yoda has even been forced to duel against those who have turned to the dark side and abandoned the Jedi.
Obi-Wan Kenobi faces perhaps the most difficult duel of all when he must battle his former Jedi student and friend, Anakin Skywalker. Not only is Obi-Wan trying to stop Anakin from falling to the dark side and becoming a Sith, but the two of them engage in their fierce lightsaber battle on the planet Mustafar – where the surface is made of lava. They must dodge each other as well as hot rocks being spewed up from the ground. Yikes!
