World of Warcraft for Beginners

World of Warcraft for Beginners

By Henry Fry, Team Coordinator, DK

With the much-anticipated movie in theaters now, where do you even begin when it comes to the vast, mythic realm of Azeroth? Well, worry not, worgens! Because we’ve compiled a guide to help you navigate from dismal Bilgewater Harbour all the way to the splendor of Silvermoon City.

Where to start?

World of Warcraft is the largest massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) in the world. In 2014 the game’s creator, Blizzard Entertainment, announced that it had over 100 million accounts since being released in 2004.

It currently holds the Guinness World Record for the most popular MMORPG by subscribers. Users buy a subscription to control a character avatar to complete tasks, fight monsters, explore landscapes and interact with other players.

It has since spawned a franchise encompassing two board games, a trading card game, a collectible miniatures game, a comic book series, and now a movie.

What’s the plot?

World of Warcraft is set in the sprawling world of Azeroth, although within this there are multiple other worlds.

Its history stretches back over 10,000 years to the War of the Ancients, when the Pangea-like continent of Kalimdor was split by the Great Sunderling and a vast font of arcane power called the Well of Eternity was destroyed.

Over the ensuing years, three wars and a succession of cataclysmic events scarred the world’s many regions, borne by conflicts between elves, trolls, dwarves, orcs, goblins and humans.

Now most of Azeroth’s kingdoms belong to one of two political factions: the Horde and the Alliance.

Watch out for…

  • Deadly enemies! Azeroth hides many unexpected predators, from the swirling whirlpool at the world’s centre, known as the Maelstrom, to the T-Rex-esque Devilsaurs and lumbering horned Kodo. There are also creatures such as the powerful banshees and sea-dwelling Naga who can kill you with a scream, or drag you to the icy depths of the Great Sea.

  • Getting lost in the game! There are still many undiscovered small islands in the world of Azeroth, such as Kezan, the Lost Isles, and the Wandering Isle. And who knows where else is still unknown…
  • Becoming dangerously addicted! Once you grasp one of Azzinoth’s fearsome blades, you might find it hard to let go again!
