I bought the debut appearance (Fantastic Four #52) off the shelf in 1966 because I was a huge Jack Kirby fan, and was stuck with T’Challa because he seemed exotic and mysterious.
He’s the most strategic and intellectual fighter in the MU – even greater than Captain America and Mr. Fantastic.
He must have been an instant rallying point and role model for every non-white reader who finally had a champion like themselves, and showed everybody that capability and heroism has no color bar.
My favorite stories always ended too soon and I wanted more. If I couldn’t find more, I could always make my own...
Stephen “Win” Wiacek has worked in all areas of the comics industry since the 1980s; producing scripts, art and teaching schemes for universities, retailers, film and television companies. He Chaired the Comics Creators Guild for a decade and consults for advertising firms who use graphic narrative in their campaigns. As well as writing and drawing for most British comics publishers and many newspapers, he has taught at various universities and the London Cartoon Centre. He currently writes about the history of comics and has contributed to DK titles including Ultimate Marvel, DC Comics Encyclopedia All New Edition, and Marvel Year by Year.
