Disney's latest stunningly animated film Moana is without a doubt one of its most impressive films yet. In it, the feisty Moana pairs with the unlikely Maui, the most powerful demigod in the Pacific Islands. The pair set out to save Moana’s island, which is threatened by a terrible darkness believed to be caused by Maui's own wrongdoings. With the mission of saving the world in their hands, this unlikely duo must set aside their differences and work together to save the world from the new threats that lie ahead.
Disney has a great history of pairing up seemingly unlikely duos, beloved characters who are cherished for their contrasts and absurdities. For that reason, we're taking a look at some of our favorite and most memorable Disney duos in honour of Moana.
This unlikely meerkat/warthog duo have quite a long history, one that stretches back to before the events of The Lion King. Feeling that he’s an outcast within his own meerkat colony, Timon sets off to find his place in the world. Soon after leaving, Timon encounters Pumbaa who, like Timon, feels alone in the vast jungle. Realizing they share a common ambition, the two team up to search for the perfect home, and to find their Hakuna Matata.
Disney•Pixar's fourth animated feature film told the story of Mike Wazowski and James "Sulley" Sullivan, who get caught up in a case of corporate espionage gone awry. In the middle of everything is a human child named Boo, who turns the entire city of Monstropolis upside down, and forever changes Mike and Sulley's lives for the better.
Playing the straight man to Mike's goofy and disorganized personality, Sulley keeps the two in order, while Mike is always around to give the big guy a hand. Their friendship goes back to their school days at Monsters University, before they worked their way up to become Top Scarers on the Monsters Inc. Scare Floor.
For Andy Davis's entire childhood, his vintage cowboy doll Sheriff Woody has always been there for him. For both Andy and Woody, the friendship means the world. However, when a newer, more modern action figure named Buzz Lightyear arrives on Andy's bed, Woody's easygoing life and popularity in Andy's Room come to a halt. Unbeknownst to Buzz, his abrupt arrival has also overthrown Woody's leading role amongst the toys in Andy's room.
Jealous of Buzz's new popularity, Woody sets out to get rid of his rival, but the two are caught up in an unlikely adventure, in which they have to find their way back home. Buzz and Woody realize that they’ll have to set aside their differences in order to achieve their common goal, and soon learn that friends can be found in even the most unexpected of places.
Perhaps the oddest, but greatest, unlikely team is the pairing of Lilo and Stitch. When Stitch, an escaped experiment from the United Galactic Federation, crash lands on Earth, he quickly gets caught up in the life of a young girl, Lilo. Stitch goes to great lengths to disguise himself in order to be adopted as her pet, but the Galactic Federation arrives on Earth in an attempt to re-capture him. Lilo and Stitch reminds us that friends come in unlikely shapes and forms, and that despite their flaws (and sometimes their alien tendencies) we accept them for who they are.
Every friendship has a beginning, whether it's meeting at a bus stop or bumping into each other as you frantically try to track down a missing boat. Ever since that fateful day in Finding Nemo, the pairing of paranoid Marlin with goofy, easy-going Dory has been a friendship for the ages. Despite his initial scepticism, Marlin eventually puts his doubts about Dory aside, as she sticks with him throughout his journey and remains dedicated to finding his son Chico... er, Nemo. Dory has no shortage of flaws, but her loyalty and determination make her a truly great friend.
