Easy Hacks for At-Home Yoga Practice

Don’t have yoga props? Swap them for a few common household items.

Lucia Bailey is a marketing and PR assistant at DK. She has her 200 hour yoga teacher training certification.

If you find a pose where you need something to help you assist but you don’t have a full yoga studio in your house, these 5 household items can assist you in your practice. This will  allow you to get further into the pose without having to order anything.

1.

To replace a strap, use a scarf or a belt.

People often forget that straps are the same length as a belt of a scarf. Either of these are great to use when you are trying to stretch one leg at a time or in standing hand-to-big-toe pose if you have tight hamstrings.
2.

To replace a block, a book or a board game box.

If you need extra space in poses like half moon or forward fold, grab a book or board game box. They have different levels just like a block and with the board game box, you can challenge yourself more by not putting so much wait into your hands. Get the extra space you need without giving up the challenge.

3.

To replace a bolster, a blanket or a pillow.

So simple and just as cozy. Any position you are doing with a bolster can be replaced by a pillow and a blanket.
4.

For dumbbells, soup cans, wine bottles, soda cans, or bottles of any cooking oil.

First, everyone needs to check and make sure the caps are closed before they do anything with them. Now that you’re safe, if you don’t have weights in your house and want to create a more challenging practice, grab one of these items to add weight into your practice.
5.

For a yoga mat, a blanket or a towel.

If you’re guilty of just going onto the floor for your yoga practice, stop now. Grab a blanket or a towel to create a small space for your practice. I enjoy a towel a bit more because I find that it has more of a grip.
