Mayhem in Mystic Realms: Exploring the World of Doctor Strange

To celebrate the upcoming Doctor Strange film starring Benedict Cumberbatch, we’re taking a look at some of the most important locations and other-worldly realms from the beloved franchise.

These weird and wondrous regions, where time, distance, and the Earthly laws of physics are meaningless, are largely hidden from mortal eyes – but not from the powers of Doctor Strange. Buckle up – things are about to get bizarre!

Sanctum Sanctorum

Located in the heart of New York City, Doctor Strange’s townhouse – known as the Sanctum Sanctorum – is not just the home and headquarters of the master mystic. The building also houses his enormous library and collection of magical artifacts, both light and dark, and provides passage to realms far beyond that of this Earth.

Far from being haunted, the Sanctum Sanctorum is indeed “alive” with magic. The exact dimensions of the house are unknown, with the interior seeming to be significantly larger than its external appearance would suggest. While some rooms are fixed in place, they are surrounded by a distortion in time and space, creating labyrinthine corridors and endless chambers that can move around.

The Dark Dimension

The Dark Dimension is a vast cosmic realm made up of many realities that fold together to create a universe separate from our own. Ruled over by the tyrannical Dormammu – one of Doctor Strange’s most dangerous and determined foes – it was once inhabited by sorcerers named Mhuruuks. Aeons ago, Dormammu and his sister Umar – mother of Strange’s beloved, Clea – wrested control of the realm, destroying all opposition. Later, for a time, Clea herself became ruler.

Dimension of Dreams

Doctor Strange has faced Nightmare in the demon’s Dimension of Dreams many times, but Brother Voodoo also visited the realm when he became the new Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Voodoo. Through a fiendish plot enacted by Doctor Doom, Voodoo was banished to the Dream Dimension and forced to fight his way back to Earth. Unfortunately, in doing so, he allowed Nightmare to transform Earth into a living unreality – a bad dream made all too real.

Hell – sometimes called Hades – is filled with fire, brimstone, and all manner of evil. It is divided into various territories, which are ruled over by the demonic Hell-Lords. Several of them have been Doctor Strange’s greatest enemies over the years, such as Dormammu, Satannish, and Mephisto.

In Mephisto’s Realm, time passes extremely slowly, with just a few days on Earth feeling like many years. It was to this abysmal place that Doctor Strange accompanied Doctor Doom on his ceaseless quest to free Doom’s mother’s soul.

Fandazar Foo

Described by Doctor Strange as a paradise where magicians could meditate and replenish themselves, Fandazar Foo was a nexus between dimensions rich with magical forces. That tranquillity was completely shattered when magic exterminating zealots, the Empirikul, attacked the realm and purged it of any trace of mysticism. When Strange ventured to these mystical crossroads to find the cause of recent magical failures, he was shocked to discover a desolate place littered with the bodies of deceased Sorcerers Supreme.
