What is a superfood? What makes a food “super” to begin with?

The food you eat provides your body with the fuel it needs for energy, the building blocks for growth and repair of tissues, and tools that protect cells and organs from disease. Superfoods are simply foods that deliver impressive quantities of these health-promoting nutrients. They’re foods that are packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytochemicals, fibre or healthy fats.

What are some common superfoods?

Common superfoods include quinoa, buckwheat, chia seeds, kale, lentils, avocados, pomegranates, matcha powder, acai powder, spirulina and chlorella. Everyday shopping items like raspberries, strawberries, salmon, chicken, yogourt and eggs are all superfoods, too!

Will eating superfoods make me healthy?

Superfoods aren’t magic bullets – throwing a few superfoods into an unhealthy or unbalanced diet won’t transform your health or wellbeing. As well as eating clean and supercharging your diet with superfoods, you also need to exercise regularly, drink alcohol in moderation and so on. However, as part of an all-around healthy lifestyle, a diet that’s rich in superfoods can provide real health benefits.

What are the health benefits of eating superfoods?

Different superfoods provide distinct benefits for your body. Superfoods rich in magnesium, calcium or tryptophan help your body manufacture sleep hormones, helping you get a good night’s sleep. Phytochemicals found in superfoods also help improve blood flow to your brain, and omega-3 fatty acids help keep your brain healthy.

The properties in superfoods can also contribute to disease prevention, blood health, digestive health, bone, joint and muscle strength, eye health, skin health and anti-ageing.

How often should I eat superfoods?

Whatever your age, you should strive to include some superfoods in your diet every day – it’s never too early or too late to start incorporating them! Some superfoods set you up for lifelong good health, and others may even help reverse existing cell damage. Try to incorporate 3-4 superfood into your meals every day, and vary them from week to week.

How do I get started with clean eating?

Clean eating is simple: it means eating foods that are unprocessed or minimally processed. There’s no need to eat only raw foods, or to cut particular food groups out of your diet – just embrace the whole range of superfoods available.

You don’t need to overhaul your whole life to eat clean – even making a few simple changes to your shopping, cooking and eating habits can transform your diet. Planning your weekly meals and shopping list ahead of time can help your avoid turning to convenience foods in a busy week. Checking food labels and freezing meals can keep you on track. And you don’t even need to be perfect! Try to eat healthily most of the time, in order to give your body the nutrients it needs without feeling deprived.
