  3. Monarch butterflies lay their eggs only on milkweed plants.

  4. The frilled shark has the longest gestation period of any species. The embryo grows inside the mother for three and a half years before finally being born!

  5. Lightning is about 54,000° F, which is hotter than the surface of the sun.

  6. Vatnajökull is the largest glacier in Europe, and its ice about 1,000 years old.

  7. Mexico’s cenotes (“sacred wells”) are secret pools filled with clear water. The deepest one is El Zacatón—deeper (1,112 feet) than the Eiffel Tower is high (1,063 feet).

  9. Free divers hold their breath for minutes at a time as they plunge to depths more than 328 feet. At 328 feet, water pressure compresses human lungs to the size of fists.
