Funny Face Optical Illusion

Have you ever wondered how color works? Or what happens in the 13 milliseconds between an image meeting the eyes and being processed by the brain? This video explains the science behind the “funny face” illusion.

Looking at the face in “negative colors” leaves an “afterimage” when you look at the white screen. This is because when you focus on one color, such as blue, for a long time, the cones that detect blue get tired, so when the screen changes suddenly, the other cones fire off stronger signals, meaning that you very briefly see the opposite image, which in this case, is the image of the face. An amazing optical illusion!

Learn more awesome facts about the eyes with this great kids’ science video, taken from the book Color Illusions. Color Illusions is bursting with fun illusions that will bend and boggle the mind!
